EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Greece, Israel, and five other countries of the Eastern Mediterranean have established the East Med Gas Forum. Turkey is not a member and is employing its own muscular approach in the region. The US would like the Forum to be more inclusive, specifically toward Ankara. Athens and Jerusalem could launch a diplomatic initiative to explore Turkey’s participation, as they have nothing to lose and much to gain from such an initiative.

Η Κεντρική Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή του Κόμματος των Νεότουρκων, “Ένωση και Πρόοδος”, συνεδριάζει:
Ταλαάτ (πρόεδρος): Αυτά τα φίδια έχουν πάλι σηκωθεί. Πρέπει να τους δώσουμε το τελικό χτύπημα.
Χασάν Φεχμί: Νάχουν την οργή του Αλλάχ. Να εξοντωθούν, και τα κουφάρια τους να πεταχτούν στους γκρεμούς.
Καρακεμάλ: Όλεθρος τους πρέπει, να τους ξεπαστρέψουμε όλους.
Ναζίμ: Σε τούτον τον τόπο, να μη μείνει ούτε ένας Αρμένης ζωντανός. Βρισκόμαστε σε εμπόλεμη κατάσταση. Δεν μπορούμε να ελπίζουμε πως θα βρούμε καλύτερη ευκαιρία.

This paper explains the reasons behind Turkey’s desire to build an elaborate air defense structure, and discuss how and why its successive attempts to reach this objective in collaboration with the allied countries have failed.

It highlights the major arguments behind the severe criticisms in the West concerning Turkey’s negotiations, first with a Chinese firm, and then with a Russian firm, and how this entire process has become a serious bone of contention between Turkey and the U.S., carrying a risk of a spill over into NATO. It also discusses why and how the severe sanctions threatened to be imposed on Turkish defense industries by the Trump administration will indeed damage the security and the defensive capability not only of Turkey, but also the U.S.
